Taigh Uilleim is conveniently situated for many of the most popular sights on Skye with Dunvegan Castle, the Coral Beaches, the Talisker Distillery and Neist Point Lighthouse all within half an hour’s drive. Portree, the Island’s main town, with banks, cafes and restaurants, a cinema, a swimming pool, gift shops, a tourist information centre, petrol stations and supermarkets, is about 35 minutes away.
Dunvegan Castle
Dunvegan Castle is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and has been the ancestral home of the Chiefs of clan MacLeod for 800 years. The castle is about 10 minutes drive from Taigh Uilleim.
Coral Beaches
Despite the name the coral beaches are not made of coral but of fossilised and sun-bleached algae. They are easily reached by a 25 minute walk from the car park at Claigan another 10 minutes drive beyond Dunvegan Castle.
Talisker Distillery
Talisker Distillery is the oldest working distillery on Skye and offers guided tours and whisky tastings. Note that children under 8 years old cannot take a tour. The distillery is about 30 minutes drive from Taigh Uilleim.
Neist Point Lighthouse
Built in 1909 by David Alan Stevenson of the famous family of Scottish lighthouse engineers and the cousin of author Robert Louis Stevenson, the Neist Point lighthouse is now automated with a white flash every 5 seconds. The lighthouse is about 30 minutes drive from Taigh Uilleim.
Dun Beag Broch
Dun Beag is Skye’s best preserved broch – a kind of Iron Age round stone tower only found in Scotland. The broch is about 12 minutes drive from Taigh Uilleim
The Fairy Pools
The Fairy Pools are rock pools of crystal clear spring water fed by a series of waterfalls in the shadow of the Cuillin. They are about 40 minutes drive from Taigh Uilleim.
